Holon coverage and usage
Holon installation and usage
1. Install Holon from the Apple App Store.
2. Please grant all the requested permissions, the location-based content won’t work otherwise.
It’s important that you grant the location request “Allow While In Use” or “Always Allow”, when prompted.
3. Place phone in a pocket, wear headphones and go outdoors. Since the technology relies on GPS (satellite) coverage, you’ll need to be outside for the app to work. iPad is not recommended unless it's a Cellular + GPS equipped model.
PS. When not using, turn Holon off to conserve battery (press the big button or swipe away the app).
PLEASE NOTE: Holon only works correctly in the locations on the map!
Red areas indicate optimal coverage, blue areas are less precise. Request your area to be added using this form
About Holon
Holon is an auditory AR app for city-wide, ubiquitous, adaptive music that is driven by the activity of listeners and their interactions with the environment. Holon can measure proximity to amenities, such as benches, bins, post boxes, shops, cafes and so on, effectively turning them into musical emitters and modulators. Urban morphology (e.g. Land Use/Land Cover) can subtly influence or radically transform the experience in supported areas.
Requirements are an iPhone and a data plan (amount of data is low). Headphones or in-vehicle audio are needed for perceptual feedback (AirPods Pro/Max recommended with transparency mode).
Musical sequences and events are created from geospatial data and environmental data in real time. Location type, directions, time of day and the position of the Sun/Moon all influence the music in various ways. For example, cloud cover can determine the musical scale, while activity/speed might trigger notes.
Holon is built on the Holonic platform for geospatial musical computing, available as a white-label solution for B2B clients. We can now provide artists early access to our content tools. Visit https://holon.ist/manual/#mirack for more information.
